Tranz Awareness At The Iowa City Library

9642197_G

This is the transcript of correspondence between myself and the director of the Iowa City Public Library,  Mx. Susan Craig. I noticed a display of literature in a prominent position at the library and wondered whether it was a good idea to advertise medical procedures to children who might not understand the risks associated with medical sexual re-assignment treatments. There is of course no gender critical literature at the ICPL, no Mary Daly,  No Janice Raymond,  nothing. Her invitation to set up my own display was hollow because of the lack of gender critical voices being represented at the library.  It’s as if Second Wave feminism has been deleted from history, which coincidentally, is what patriarchy does to all women’s voices and all of women’s history

Subject: Trans Awareness

Hello Susan Craig,

I don’t know if you are the appropriate person to be directing this missive to, but i need to speak up about something i have a strong concern about.  I came into the library today and saw the display on Trans Awareness Week. Last year I also noticed the display and wrote to ICPL via your Facebook page. In the intervening year I have done considerable research into the Trans phenomenon and I am even more concerned about your uncritical promotion of this trend. Yes, fine, free speech and dissemination of information about cultures is a good thing, but there is a very dark side to Transgenderism that you are not presenting and unfortunately, this could cause permanent harm to impressionable young people.

So, keep the display but also present the other side of the issue. You need to give information about who is funding this initiative and the dangers to human bodies, especially the bodies of children, of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones.

This is a movement that is promoting the sterilization and mutilation of gender non-conforming children. What other mental condition in children calls for chemical sterilization and the destruction of genital tissue such that the child is unable to experience sexual pleasure? If you don’t care about women having privacy to rinse out their bloody panties without individuals who who were socialized into the male sex role before they started taking estrogen, or about former men taking away spots from women on women’s sports teams, or about rapists who say they are trans in order to be transferred to women’s prisons…then at least consider that sterilizing children and destroying their bodies with synthetic hormones needs at least a mention in your celebratory display.

Here are relevant links to some of the information that I have been researching:

Cross sex hormones cause bone decay, cancer, heart disease and genital atrophy. Adults have a right to do this to themselves. Children are too young to give consent for this.

And….Here is the reply I received from Mx. Craig:

Ms Smith,

I have talked to the staff about this display.  It is planned to coincide with Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance which is observed internationally on November 20, “as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia and to draw attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community.”    The display is in keeping with Library and City values of equity and inclusion.

We do not accept responsibility for ensuring that all points of view are represented in a display.  If you would like to share your perspective you are able to book a display space to share your information on this topic.  Here is a link to the Library’s display policy:
